ほとんどの「愛国者」の方々の発言の大部分は「同国人に対するいわれなき身びいき」ではなく、「同国人でありながら、彼または彼女と思想信教イデオロギーを共有しない人間に対する罵倒」によって構成されている

歴史が教えるように、愛国心がもっとも高揚する時期は「非国民」に対する不寛容が絶頂に達する時期と重なる。

「愛国」の度合いが進むにつれて、愛国者は同国人に対する憎しみを亢進させ、やがてその発言のほとんどが同国人に対する罵倒で構成されるようになり、その政治的情熱のほとんどすべてを同国人を処罰し、排除することに傾注するようになる。
歴史が教えてくれるのは、「愛国者が増えすぎると国が滅びる」という逆説である。
